The Reason People Can’t Escape the 9-5 (And How You Can)

People can’t escape their 9-5 because they’re too rational.

They’ve fallen into groupthink. Their perspectives are narrow and they see a subjective reality. They’re blind to new opportunities and solutions. While outsiders easily see where to improve. Independent consultants demand high fees because of this. They lack the bias of those heavily involved with the company.

If you want to escape, you have to become an outsider.

You have to dislodge yourself from the culture you’re in. This starts with taking your environment less seriously. No matter how seriously it takes itself. Someone in the world would look at it and think it’s ridiculous.

If you want to escape, you have to know where you want to go.

You have to start diverting energy away from your 9-5. And away from the escapist crowd. It needs to go into things that will help you grow the life you want. You can’t keep wasting it, you have to build something.

If you want to escape, you have to start forming the right habits.

You have to start building habits aligned with where you’re headed. People fantasize about success, but not the discipline it requires. You’re going to need some habits in place. The sooner you build them, the better.

If you want to escape, you have to be willing to take risks.

You have to have the right perspective around struggle and failure. Without pressure we can’t grow. Escaping the 9-5 can feel like walking a tightrope. If you don’t give up it will grow you into the person you want to be.

If you want to escape, you have to ignore anything that says you can’t.

You have to overcome the subjectively rational culture we all live in. There’s always someone or something saying you can’t win. This can make believing in ourselves and our dreams difficult. But that belief is necessary.
